Snatched From The Jaws Of Victory
THIS VIDEO is just wroooong. A bunch of Texas guys trick one of their friends into thinking he'd just won untold millions in the Texas lottery. There's jumping, screaming, hugging and the eventual barrage of swearwords. This is the main reason why there are so many homicidal maniacs in Texas.
Quote of the Day

Here's an extra thought. Doesn't it make sense for Disney to buy Nintendo, or vice-versa? Can you imagine Mario World as a portion of Disney park? A giant Nintendo arcade, Mushroom Kingdom... The Japanese LOVE Mickey Mouse. Doesn't this make sense? Nintendo, send me a check.

On lunch break, I decided to drop into Books-A-Million and spend a gift card I got for Christmas. I got a really cool Tokyo City Guide, and Volume 2 and Volume 3 of the How To Draw Manga : Ultimate Manga Lessons series. Pretty cool stuff.
Old Conspiracy Theories Abound!
Everyone claims to have solved the JFK Assassination, not that it matters much anymore. While surfing I ran across a site that has the old Zapruder film (the most famous film footage of the assasination) and they have gone through the trouble of stabalizing the footage so that it's more clear than ever. That much is atleast interesting.
Back and to the left... back and to the left...

Sudoku
I've seen the word "sudoku" everywhere lately. Books-A-Million is made up of atleast half a million books on the topic. Sudoku is a simple puzzle game which requires no special skill of math. All you do (in most sudoku puzzles) is create a line in all directions (horizontal and vertical) that list all numbers 1 through 9. Simple? In concept, yes.. but it can also be very challenging. If you're not keen on numbers you can also find sudoku puzzles that use symbols, farm animals, letters - you name it.
If you're into puzzle games or tests of logic, check out Sudoku.

Top 50 Robots Of All Time
Stanley the robot-driven Volkswagon Toureg is better than the Terminator?? I think this list was rigged. It was nice to see Nintendo's R.O.B. The Robot on the list, even though I wouldn't have included it. Where is Rosie, the Jetson's maid? The robot from Lost In Space?
I Wonder If It Overheats
Nissan and Microsoft have teamed up to introduce a concept car with an integrated XBox 360. Not impressed? How about this : If you park the car, you can play the games (such as Project Gotham Racing 3) using the car's steering wheel and pedals. Schweet?
Zelda : Twilight Princess Footage

For anyone who cares (which should be just about everyone) Google Video has a new, 30-minute clip of in-game footage from The Legend of Zelda : Twilight Princess for Nintendo Gamecube. What's more, they recently announced that you would be able to play it using the new Revolution controller. Yummy!
Also, check out the Official Legend of Zelda Website.

This Game Will Eat Your Soul
Okay, it's not really a game and it doesn't really hunger for souls, but it is definately addictive and a good timekiller. It's called World of Sand, and this link is courtest of BoxRocker.
Power Laces!
Here is a chance to have a pair of power lace sneakers (like those worn by Michael J. Fox in Back To The Future 2) created by Nike. An online petition has been assembled, asking Nike to create an actual working pair of these sci-fi shoes to be sold to the public. I don't know if the petition will work, but it's worth a shot signing the petition.
Michael Forever!
This animation smokes so much crack it's unbelieavable. Michael Jackson saves the entire Nintendo (actually, Japanese Famicom) world from Princess Toadstool piloting a ginormous Zangief of Street Fighter 2 fame.
Excuse me... what?
Excuse me... what?
Wakka Wakka
I saw this Gametap commercial on Cartoon Network the other night and died laughing. Then I arose from the dead and promptly forgot about it, until I just found it on a site called DevilDucky. I feel my pulse weakening.
Time To Make The Daisies

Michael Vale, the "Duncan Donuts guy" (who was apparently called Fred) famous for bemoaning "time to make the donuts", has died at the age of 83 of - get this - diabetes. Ironic much? Time to make the donuts, but don't eat them!
Sorry, I'm not making light of his death or diabetes or jelly donuts.
Babes In Toyland
I found an interesting blog that seems devoted to Japanese (toy) models, called Dannychoo.com. There seems to be a lot of content and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope digital images of details. There is a lot to see here.

Goldeneye 007 Half-life 2 Mod Goes Alpha
A group of fans of the original Nintendo 64 classic - Goldeneye 007 - have put together a remake using the Half-life 2 engine and have just released the alpha version. It looks really smooth and my guess is that it's so good that it's totally eclipses the original and yet it is most likely nowhere near as fun.

Nuclear Eggnog
Eggnog in Quantity
Adapted from "The Joy of Cooking"
serves approximately 20
12 eggs, separated
1 pound confectioner's sugar
4-6 cups bourbon (or rum)
2 quarts whipping cream
pinch of salt
freshly grated nutmeg
1. Strain the egg yolks through a sieve and beat until light in color. Gradually add the sugar. While continuing to beat, slowly add 2 cups of the bourbon. Cover the mixture and let stand for 1 hour to dispel the "eggy" taste.
2. Add 2-4 more cups of liquor and the cream, beating well. Cover and refrigerate the mixture for 3 hours.
3. Beat the egg whites until stiff but not dry. Fold them into the other ingredients. Grate nutmeg to taste into the eggnog and fold it in. Serve with an additional sprinkling of nutmeg over each serving.

G15 Gaming Keyboard
Although I would almost always rather sit on the sofa playing a handheld or console game, I do give merit to PC games. I don't personally enjoy being hunched over a keyboard typing letters to perform actions and console joystick controls on the PC always end up feeling lacking.

Having said all this, I really like Logitech's new G15 Gaming Keyboard. I haven't actually used one, but it looks to be really techy looking and I'm sure - from what reviews I read - it works like a charm. I really like the blue, glowing keys, and the small LCD window attached to the keyboard sounds pretty handy as long as developers utilize it to display in-game information.
Having said all that, it's still a keyboard and you'd still be hunched over it, pressing letters. But it sure would jazz up other computer-related activities. Midnight blogging anyone?

Rock Of Ages

I'm feeling a bit of rock nostalgia, so I thought I'd say a little something about Aerosmith. As a teen growing up, I was a huge fan of Aerosmith. They were rock badboys, but not so ... Warrant. It's awfully hard to identify with a band like Warrant who looked like Miami Vice extras thrown together to make something gimmicky. But Aerosmith was a little more accessable. They were one of the original hellion bands of the late 70's, early 80's, and have had unbelievable staying power even up to today.
I remember all their wild videos on MTV, and I literally melted a copy of Permanent Vacation while playing (and eventually beating) the original Metroid on my NES. I'd have to say that Vacation is my pick for all-time best Aerosmith album, with PUMP coming in second. I know the old-school Aerosmith fans will argue with older albums like Toys In The Attic, but I've always felt that old Aerosmith and new Aerosmith are almost two entirely different bands. Even Steven Tyler's voice sounds different on songs like Mia and Dream On, then they do on later hits.
Speaking of later hits (or atleast later albums) I really enjoyed Nine Lives and Just Push Play, which had that classic Aerosmith sound tweaked with a little more headtrip, in an almost rave sort'a way.
Anyway, Aerosmith. I dig em, and I don't care who knows!
The Cool Hunter
I do a LOT of surfing online. For that reason, I know hundreds and hundreds of links to sites all over the world and I am unfortunately plugged way into the daily happening of celebrities, helpless victims, tech geeks, outer space occurrances, and international incidents.
I post a lot of the stuff that I find online that I personally consider "cool", and in sifting through the neverending tidalwave of net news sites, I invariably pan up the same story or "cool" item, many MANY times.
Then I struck gold with The Cool Hunter. Oh. My. Gard. There is so much "cool" stuff there that it's a bit overwhelming at first glance. I found myself pulled in by just about everything, and not once did I think "Oh yeah, I saw that on random tech site. Somehow... and don't ask me how... they had completely fresh content.

"Lazy Sunday"
Lazy Sunday, wake up in the late afternoon,
Call Parnell just to see how he's doing.
Hello? What up Parn? Yo, Samberg what's crackin'?
You thinking what I'm thinking? Narnia! Man, it's happening.
But first my hunger pains are sticking like duct tape,
Let's hit up Magnolia and mack on some cupcakes,
No doubt, that bakery's got all the bomb frostings,
I love those cupcakes like McAdams loves Gosling.
2, no 6, no 12 - baker's dozen.
I told that I'm crazy for these cupcakes, cousin.
Yo where's the movie playing? Upper West Side, dude,
Well, let's hit up Yahoo Maps to find the dopest route.
I prefer Mapquest, that's a good one too,
Google Maps is the best, true dat, double true.
68 to Broadway, step on it sucker,
What you wanna do, Chris? Snack attack, mother!@%$#!
Hit the Chronic - WHAT - cles of Narnia.
Yes the Chronic - WHAT - cles of Narnia.
We love that Chronic - WHAT - cles of Narnia.
Pass that Chronic - WHAT - cles of Narnia.
Yo, stop at the deli, the theatre's overpriced,
You got the backpack, gonna pack it up nice.
Don't want security to get suspicious,
Mr. Pibb and Red Vines equals crazy delicious,
Yo, reach in my pocket, pull out some dough,
Girl actin' like she never seen a ten before.
It's all about the Hamiltons, baby.
Throw the snacks in the bag and I'm ghost like Swayze.
Roll up to the theatre, ticket buying what we're handling,
You can call us Aaron Burr, from the way we're dropping Hamiltons.
Now parked in our seats, movie trivia's the illest.
What Friends alum starred in films with Bruce Willis?
We answer so fast it was scary,
Everyone stared in awe when we screamed Matthew Perry.
Now quiet in the theare or it's gonna get tragic.
We're bout to get taken to a dreamworld of magic.
Hit the Chronic - WHAT - cles of Narnia.
Yes the Chronic - WHAT - cles of Narnia.
We love that Chronic - WHAT - cles of Narnia.
Pass that Chronic - WHAT - cles of Narnia.
I'm In Love!

The New Zelda

No, I'm not talking about The Legend of Zelda : Twilight Princess... I'm talking about a complete redone version of Zelda 1, called The Legend of Zelda : Outlands. I don't know how much I could get back into playing Zelda 1 on an NES emulator, but I'm willing to give it a try. It does look very nice. More than moving items around, this is a complete new game with all new missions.

For my crafty-with-electronics friends, I'd pay mega bucks for anyone who could hack an original NES to include a USB port so I could plug in a memory card full of NES Roms (such as this game) and play it through the NES hardware. Anyone feel froggy? Also acceptable is hacking an NES cartridge to remove the internal ROM storage and hotwire in a memory card slot. Can it be done?

Just Pennies A Day

We'll get you, Jor-El!!
If Sally Struthers could roll over and if she was dead, she'd definately be trying to do it in her grave. I thought for pennies a day we could feed these hungry third-world kids, and now they need $100 laptops?? Boy, kids grow up quick, don't they? Maybe if they're spending their time playing Flash games, shopping on ebay, reading web comics, or looking at internet porn, or flirting with 50-year-old guys who say they're Asian cheerleaders, they won't realize how hungry they are.

I Ain't Dead Yet MF*ers!

A phrase attributed to Richard Pryor, which is - as of today - no longer true. Richard Pryor is one of the first comedians I ever looked up to as a kid. He was more than some slicked-up yukster in a cheap suit doing "Take my wife, please" jokes. He was cutting edge in a day before cutting edge was a pre-defined term.
I remember as a kid I would sneak to watch Richard Pryor - Live On The Sunset Strip on my stepfather's Betamax player (I'm not explaining what that is, so Google it yourself). It was the ultimate taboo to hear this hilarious black man talking about adult topics that I knew nothing about. In spite of this, he was one of the funniest men I'd ever laid eyes on, and even the black comedians of today that I like (Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence come to mind) they owe everything to Pryor. Their style, their presentation and delivery, it's all thanks to Pryor.
Richard Pryor had a very hard life, punctuated too often with harshness greater than most of us will ever know. I know that towards the end he had turned his life around and found peace, even as he battled Multiple Sclerosis. I hope that wherever he is now, he's still laughing and sharing it with those around him.
Samorost 2

Wow. You've got to check this game out. It's called Samorost 2 and it's very strange and lots of fun. It's basically a puzzle / adventure game along the lines of Myst, but very odd. Try to play it for 5 minutes and I guarantee you won't be able to quit.
Warning! This game requires broadband internet service to get the full effect. Even then you'll see a black screen a lot, but you'll know it's time to play once the music starts.

Blowfly Alarm Clock

I can't say it any better than the official website.
Many sleepers experience that after they turn off the alarm clock they go on sleeping. One thing that sometimes wakes you up at night and prevents you from sleeping is the mosquito or blowfly when flying around your room. You can't and don't want to fall asleep again until you've caught it. These produces adrenalin and requires movements. The alarm clock blowfly works like a "blowfly" that at the desire time it escapes from a cage in your room. It starts moving and producing sound around you - to turn it off you should catch it and put it back in the cage.

We used to play Battle Pencils in highschool, but it was basically just whacking each other with pencils until someone yelled stop.

Note that it has an apparent annual income of around $750,000, however the current owners are questioning the "moral" issues involved in peddling adult smut, so want out.
I'd give $100,000 just for a studio in California, not to mention Jenna Jameson's home number. haha.

Here is an interesting article about destroying the Earth. Don't worry, it's much harder than you'd imagine.
Go Directly To Jail
Here is a link to print your own Monopoly money in case you need more to replace the cash your dog ate. One of my most traumatic childhood memories is the time I dropped a Monopoly game at my grandmother's house and the play money blew all over the neighborhood. I've been chasing money ever since.
Then there's the time a dog ran away with one of my kittens...

Holiday Stress
I know with the holidays coming up you are prolly all stressed. It's okay, people. I'll make it real easy for you and post up a link to my Froogle Wishlist. Froogle is a search site that lets you search deals and auctions online to find the products you're looking for. I'm not building this wishlist so that you have to buy the products from the site linked to. Rather, it is an over-all catalog of Rush's wants at this moment in time.
If you have a Froogle list, lemme check it out! Leave the link in your comment. Who knows, I might just buy you something too.

Jeff Lynne
Spurred on by the fact that I've posted about many great things and had the person or people responsible post comments, I'd like to say a little about Jeff Lynne.
As far as musicians go, Jeff Lynne has to be my all-time favorite songwriter, musician, producer, etc. I can't believe that after all these years, he's stayed so far in the background. He pretty much discovered (or at the very least pioneered) Tom Petty, and has been the backbone of many great Beatles projects (both solo projects for Paul McCartney and George Harrison, as was as combined efforts on Free As A Bird and Real Love) and was even the producer (and best friend) turned to for George Harrison's last solo album, Brainwashed.
Of course, for those of you who are asking "Jeff who?", I might need only mention three letters : ELO. Jeff Lynne was the mastermind behind The Electric Light Orchestra and totally exploded their popularity after being asked to join by (and subsequently replacing as frontman) Roy Wood. He's written a veritable slew of hits and many catchy songs you've sung on the classic rock stations, such as Evil Woman, Don't Bring Me Down, Can't Get It Out Of My Head, and many others. Despite this, not many people know who they are.
I would give anything to meet Jeff Lynne. If anyone within the sound of my voice knows how to get in touch with him, or should Jeff Google himself and end up here, please I'd give anything to meet you. I'd fly to California in a heartbeat just to have lunch with him, turn around and come home. It may sound fanboyish, but I really think just to spend ten minutes with him would be awesome. There's so much I'd like to ask him and much more I'd just like to say.
So anyway, blogs are public and I've now publically bowed down before a hero and I hope there are others out there who know what I mean and - what's more - what his music and influence means to me. Jeff, you're alright in my book.
If you happen to be a fan of ELO, here is a Free ELO Screensaver that came from the official ELO website.

Billy West Radio
On the way to work on Friday I happened to catch a radio interview with the famous cartoon voice, Billy West. This guy is super talented way beyond what you might recognize him from. First of all, he's the voice of Ren and Stimpy. That enough is impressive. As an interesting sidenote, he mentioned that the voice of Stimpy is a sped-up version of his Larry Fine (think Three Stooges Larry) which I have to say is amazing. It's so spot-on that it sounds prerecorded.
Besides Ren and Stimpy, he is also the voice of Doug (Nickelodeon cartoon) as well as Doug bully nemesis. He was the voice of Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig and Daffy Duck in the Spacejam movie. He is also several voices on Futurama, including Fry, Dr. Zoidberg, Zapp Brannigan and Richard Nixon's head. He has also been the voice of Popeye. Those, folks, are some serious Mel Blanc-level cartoon voice chops. He is definately the cartoon voice legend of our generation.

Rick Moranis Rawks!
Those are words I never thought I'd say. Apparently Rick Moranis ("Dark Helmet" from Spaceballs, Barney Rubble from the Flintstones movie... The little possessed nerdy guy from Ghostbusters) has released an album of songs. And they're not comedy songs either, but real live serious songs and from what I've read, they're not too bad. He, of course, sang in the 1980's musical, Little Shop of Horrors, but that was done in a corny Brooklyn-esque accent. It sounds like his new album, The Agoraphobic Cowboy, might be worth a listen.

Mungo Offended... Ook Ook!
Toru Iwatani is the father of a small, disembodied yellow head known as Pac-man. At this year's DIEC (Digital Interactive Entertainment Conference), he announced five things about Pac-man you may or may not know.
1. The idea of the game came from "eating."
2. The original purpose was to attract female gamers.
3. Iwatani-san said that the ghosts as actually "monsters."
4. The logarithm (code that decides how the monster moves) for only the orange ghost is "random."
5. Even a monkey can play the game, and Iwatani-san brought a video clip to prove it.
Uhhh.. wait. That monkey comment bothers me.

Neon Racer
This is an interesting project. It's called Neon Racer and it's a simple space racing game where players pilot space ships around space tracks. The difference is that it plays on a special interactive tabletop. Items places on the surface of the table acts as obstacles. So if you set your Mountain Dew and a plate of chili cheese fries on the table, your ships will explode if it flies into it. Yes, really. Sounds really cool.
Cuckoo IP
Here is an interesting project dreamed up by a college student, which turns a standard cuckoo clock into Cuckoo IP. The clock has its own voicemail number you can call from anywhere and leave a message. After your message, you designate a time of delivery and when a message arrives, the clock retrieves it and plays it back at that designated time. Of course it does this in standard cuckoo style. Out pops bird, which opens his beak and says "Hi, give me a call at work. Bye!"
Pyro For Pornos

The Japanese Are Weird
Yes, the Japanese are weird and sex-obsessed to almost a creepy level... but this has to take the cake.

It's an all-girl fighting game where any damage inflicted will heal over time... unless you snap an upskirt photo when your opponent's skirt flies up. Makes you wonder why girls are snapping upskirt photos of other girls. Blackmail, maybe?

Adobe Acquires Macromedia
For all you tech / graphics / web geeks out there... Adobe Systems Incorporated has acquired Macromedia. Lord only knows how this will all turn out. I imagine Photoshop and Flash each staying pretty much the same. If they go for a unified style, I hope they keep Macromedia's look in favor of Adobe's
LookLater
Why bookmark your sites in Internet Explorer at home and also at work when you can use something like LookLater to store them online where they can be accessed at any time from any internet-capable computer? Create an account, add bookmarks... it couldn't be easier. It even organizes them and makes them searchable. Nice.

Wacky Packages
As a kid, one of my favorite Topps series was Wacky Packages. I remember getting a sticker collector's album and I tried in vain to get every single sticker. I even mailed off for stickers that I was missing and I never got the whole set.
Later, when ebay took off big, I ordered a brand new collector sticker album (circa 1980's) since my old one was worn out, dog-eared and held together with Scotch tape. I was introduced to Wacky Packages through the 1980's series, but I later found out that the series has been going on for decades, having started some time in the late 50's. Through my ebay obsession, I ended up purchasing several complete sets of Wacky Packages stickers from various series.
Anyway, all this to say that they just released Wacky Packages, Series 2. They're calling it Series 2 because they just recently released a new set, after nearly a decade and decided for some reason to start the count over, when actually that set would have been somewhere closer to Series 15 and this current set would be Series 16. ANYWAY, the new series is cool with art very reminiscent of the older cards from my youth. Bring back a lot of fond memories.
I picked up several packs of the latest series at Wal-mart (they are, like, a dollar a pack) and they even released a cool miniature sticker album to hold the whole series. Joyyy. I guess I'll always be a kid at heart. (Read : loser)

Season Finale

The Scifi Channel shows reruns of Quantum Leap in order (despite the fact that with a leap in and out on each episode they could be played in almost any order) and night-before-last they showed the series finale. I always loved Quantum Leap, but I have to say that it's finale has to be the most disappointing finale of all televisiondome. Please PLEASE Mr. Bellisario... put right what once went wrong! You gotta have a reunion show or an update or a new series or SOMETHING. The episode was surreal and made no real sense, there was hardly any Al (Dean Stockwell) in it, and it ended with Sam being lost in time. WTF?!?
Come on! Scott Backula is done with Enterprise now, so he needs a new gig. How about a new show where a new leaper is bouncing through time looking for Sam Beckett, to put right what ultimately went wrong with the Quantum Leap finale?

What a bad day to pack a fruit bat sandwich in my lunch. Scientists have discovered that the African fruit bat is the most likely origin of the ebola virus. Thank God! That means that Ace Ventura is most likely dead by now.
